Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
